Recovery after Vaser liposculpture: what to expect week by week

Compression garment, lymphatic drainage, when to go back to work and when you'll see the result. A realistic recovery guide written by a plastic surgeon in Mexico City.

The question I hear most often in consultation isn’t “how much does it cost?” but “how long am I going to be out of commission?” It’s a smart question: recovery is half the result. Here I’ll tell you, without sugarcoating, what Vaser liposculpture is like from day one through the third month.

First, why recovery from Vaser is different

In traditional liposuction, the cannula does the mechanical work of breaking up fat. Vaser adds a step: ultrasound that emulsifies the fat before it’s removed. That means less trauma to blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and in practice it translates into less bruising, less pain and swelling that goes down sooner. It’s not magic, it’s physics: we work with less force.

Days 1 to 3: the beginning

You leave the operating room wearing a compression garment that you’ll wear nearly all day for several weeks. The treated area will feel like you just did the most intense workout of your life. It’s normal for pinkish fluid to leak from the incisions during the first two days; that’s why we place absorbent dressings.

What you must do from day one: walk. Short laps around the house every two or three hours. Moving reduces the risk of blood clots and helps drain the swelling. What you must not do: lift anything heavy, bend over suddenly or take the garment off “just for a bit.”

Week 1: lymphatic drainage and first follow-up

Between day 3 and day 7, manual lymphatic drainage sessions begin. Many people dread them and end up loving them: they relieve the feeling of tightness and speed up the reduction of swelling. At the first follow-up I check the incisions, remove stitches if there are any and adjust the compression.

If you have a desk job, you can generally return between day 5 and day 7, with breaks to walk. If your job involves physical effort, we’re talking about two weeks.

Weeks 2 to 4: the patience phase

This is where a stage almost nobody warns you about shows up: the swelling “moves.” One day the abdomen looks flat, and the next morning it wakes up puffy. It’s completely normal: fluid redistributes and the body reabsorbs what’s left. The garment, the drainage sessions and a low-sodium diet make the difference.

Toward the end of the first month you can start light cardio (treadmill, elliptical) with medical clearance. No crunches or weights yet.

Months 2 and 3: the contour appears

Between weeks 6 and 12 the skin adapts to the new volume and you start to see the real shape. If we used Renuvion or BodyTite during surgery to help skin retraction, this is the stage where you’ll notice the skin continuing to firm up month after month.

The final result is considered to be between month 3 and month 6. The small irregularities you may notice before then usually resolve on their own; that’s why a result is never evaluated before the third month.

Signs to call your surgeon

Discomfort and swelling are expected. What is not normal and warrants a call the same day:

  • Fever above 38 °C (100.4 °F).
  • Pain that increases instead of decreasing, especially in only one leg.
  • Warm redness around an incision.
  • Difficulty breathing.

Three tips that actually work

  1. Get your home ready before surgery. Loose clothing, meals prepared, someone to stay with you for the first 48 hours.
  2. Don’t compare your day 10 to someone’s month 3 on social media. Every body sheds swelling at its own pace.
  3. Stick with the garment. It’s uncomfortable, yes. It’s also your result’s number one ally.

If you have questions about your own case, the best way to answer them is a consultation. There we look at your anatomy and your lifestyle and design a recovery plan made to fit you.
